In Singapore, all citizens have immediate access to education from the age of 7. While primary school education is free for all Singaporeans, children from low-income families are at a great disadvantage when it comes to purchasing miscellaneous learning materials that are required for school.
Last year, we managed to raise enough funds to distribute 43 Back-to-School sets for underprivileged children aged 6 to 14. Our dedicated volunteers even packed their own gifts for them. Let’s look back on the stories of the lives you’ve touched!
Step-siblings Danny, Siti and Janna (not their real names), live with a total of 7 people in their household. Their parents were single before they met and got remarried. Their mother works at a mosque while their father works as a Grab driver as he was unable to get a full-time job to take care of the children at home.
Their family gets help from other non-government organisations (NGOs) but when we met them, they were still struggling to find the money to buy milk powder for the little ones. They were happy to receive the Back To School packages and the gifts that the volunteers had prepared for them.
Aizat and Amir (not their real names) are the oldest two amongst their five siblings. They live in a rental home in Toa Payoh with their family - bringing their household total to 7 people.
Both Aizat and Amir expressed their excitement and joy while going through the items that they received during the Back to School distribution and they could not wait to use the gifts for the new school year, especially because some of the items that they received were items that they didn’t and could not afford to buy on their own.
Hannah (not her real name) and her siblings live in a two-room flat. Together, the family of 8, together with 4 cats, have 4 children who are currently in primary school. During our visit, their mother told us about the family’s situation - they could not afford to buy the children new school shoes, amongst other school materials. Hence, they are extremely grateful for the aid provided by Global Ehsan Relief.
Let’s continue to provide these disadvantaged children with quality school materials and a good start to their new school year. Join us in our aim to provide 500 Back to School sets this year so that no child gets left behind.
