When was the last time you focused on something that you lost track of time and didn’t feel the hours passing by?
In our day and age, it’s becoming more and more easy to scroll mindlessly through social media, wasting our time unknowingly.
Having the ability to focus on something deeply is becoming a lost skill in our connected world. According to recent data, the average person spends 3 hours and 15 minutes on their phone every day.
The key to success is having the capability to focus on long-term and short-term goals, as well as important daily tasks without being distracted. Not just in work, but focusing on our spirituality, physical well-being and even our relationships. The more disconnected and fragmented our focus are, the harder it’ll be for us to be the best versions of ourselves in all aspects of life.
STARTING OUR MORNING RIGHT
One of the best ways that we Muslims should start our day right is by allocating 30 to 45 minutes after the dawn prayer and focus on reading or memorising the Al-Quran. Being away from distractions and our day-to-day worries can be a powerful way to realign our intentions for the day.
Additionally, concentrating intensely on the words of Allah S.W.T. and resisting our temptations to other things, such as checking one’s phone, helps to improve the focus wiring of your brain. This will have a positive long-term impact on your ability to get critical long-term projects completed.
To develop this habit every morning, remember these tips:
Set a Specific Time
When you’re just starting out, remember to aim for a reasonable number of minutes, and gradually increase the duration of how long you spend reading the Holy Book in the morning. Remember, consistency is key! And also it is crucial to get enough sleep the night before!
Keep Your Distractions Away
Don’t have anything that might distract you within arms length! Keep your phones away.
Tame your thoughts
Sometimes we’re guilty of this; our minds tend to wander while we’re reciting the words of Allah S.W.T. If you have a burning thought that you can’t erase and you’re worried you’ll forget it, have a pen and notebook next to you so that you can record that thought! You’ll be able to come back to it once you’re done.
Remember that you’re not reciting or memorising the Al-Quran merely to exercise your focus muscles, it’s also an act of worship to Allah S.W.T. It comes with great rewards, so remember this to help you stick to this habit for the long run!
